The Ebenezer Conservation and Development Project for Nanyin (2023-2025)

  • Launched in 2023, "Ebenezer Conservation and Development Project for Nanyin" was funded by the Intangible Cultural Heritage Funding Scheme under the Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD)'s "ICH for all" two-year project in 2023-2025. The project aims to preserve and promote Nanyin, a precious intangible cultural heritage of Hong Kong with a long history and cultural content with unique artistic expression. The first year (2023-24) of the project has been successfully launched, enabling people from all walks of life to experience the long history and unique skills of Nanyin, and to feel the charm of Chinese culture embodied in this traditional art form. The project has now entered its second year (2024-25).

This project offers several Nanyin training courses. In this year, we welcome new participants to join the Nanyin Narrative Singing Class and the newly added classes for the accompanying instruments, the yehu and guzheng. Through these courses, we aim to strengthen students' knowledge and interest in Nanyin, improve the understanding and communication skills of visually impaired participants, and breathe new life into this unique art form to ensure its continued legacy.

As part of this project, our school also held a demonstration lecture to share the intricacies of with the public. The second year's demonstration lecture, 'Aesthetics of Nanyin Talk and Demonstration', featured Nanyin and Huqin Master Mr To Wing, together with Ms Chen Li-ying, the inheritor of Ping Qiang Nanyin, and several other distinguished guests, presented an extraordinary demonstration and explanation of Nanyin. Through the masters' expressive singing, instrumental performances and thoughtful explanations, the beauty and charm of traditional Chinese music was fully revealed to the audiences, allowing everyone to gain a deeper understanding of the significance of this precious cultural heritage.

In addition, our finale concert will be held on 9 May 2025, the 'Resonance in Nanyin Concert' at the Cultural Activities Hall on the third floor of the Ngau Chi Wan Civic Centre. This concert will feature renowned Nanyin performers, including Huqin Master Mr To Wing and Nanyin Master Mrs Tong Siu Yin as guest performers. The Nanyin Heritage Course students and Ebenezer Musician in Residence, Mr. Yang Enhua, will present an exciting Nanyin performance. The tutors of the project will also lead a group of visually impaired students on stage to showcase their passion for Nanyin arts. Each performer serves as a guardian of Nanyin culture, delivering heartfelt interpretations from beginner to master level, allowing the melodies of Nanyin to lead you into the rich musical world of traditional Chinese culture and experience its unique charm.

The project is also one of the activities in the Chinese Culture Promotion Series. The Leisure and Cultural Services Department (LCSD) has long been promoting Chinese history and culture through organizing an array of programmes and activities to enable the public to learn more about the broad and profound Chinese culture.
